1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:1-3 (KJV)
The ministry of the word began before creation and the Word was in the beginning with God. And then, the Word was God. Everything, visible and invisible, thrones or dominions, principalities or powers; all things were created by Him and for Him (the Word). Without Him was not anything made that was made. Remember, in the beginning was not creation (heaven or earth) but the Word. So the bible said he was before all things, visible or invisible.
WHO WAS THIS WORD?
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14 (KJV)
So biblically speaking, the Word became like one of us with flesh and blood and dwelt among us. Why did he become flesh? The ministry of the word made creation and that creation is His. If any of the creation is to be found faulty, He fixes it. The Word had a divine assignment for his creation upon the earth reading from Hebrews 2:14. This clearly shows how the inhabitants of the earth are very dear to him. The assignment of the Word towards salvation:
14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. Hebrews 2:14-18 (KJV)
Now we know the Word to be the man, Christ Jesus.
The ministry of the Word is revealed through our Lord Jesus Christ. If the Word was God, then Jesus Christ is God himself. This implies that the Word is a blueprint to know God by who he is and what he does. The Bible also says that Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God. No wonder the book of John recorded Him as the way, the truth and the life unto God. So the ministry of the word gives the believer access to knowing God. Without this, the wisdom of men including scientific knowledge and other insights from books and professors cannot provide you with the full knowledge about God, what he does and can do.
Unfortunately, the ministry of the word in Knowing God is dependent on the Spirit of God. Remember from Genesis chapter 1, where the spirit of God hovered over the waters and he could locate the missing component to be called light. Right after that, the spoken word came and light emanated. It is the union of the Word and the Spirit of God that gives a high level of spiritual illumination about God. This is what defines miracles, signs and wonders. They can never go independently to do something.
Remember that before Jesus had started his ministry at age 30, though he was the Word himself he needed the baptism of the Holy Spirit which came on him in the form of a dove. Immediately this happened, the heavens opened that he attained the sonship of the Father as the only begotten son of God in whom he is well pleased. No man can receive nothing, except to be given to him from above.
THE DIMENSIONS IN THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
How to effect the ministry of the Word to yield results comes in three dimensions;
- Consistent studying of the Word
We read scriptures to create awareness but we study for understanding to be able to apply them in our lives and most especially in our daily walk with God.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV). At the end of it all, our objective is to access the truth with the assistance of the Holy Spirit.
From my previous blog on how to access the truth through the Holy Spirit, you found out that we have to study the word to have the spiritual meaning unto every written word to access the truth from scriptures. You can read more from there concerning the studying of the word of God and the need for the required crucial element called meditation.
- Consistent Listening to the word
The second thing to do to effect the ministry of the word is to listen to the word of God. Remember, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. If the things you hear contradict the word of God, the essence of the word will not be relevant in your life. Know this also, that what we hear controls our mind that what is stored being the word of God can be eliminated. You will need to be very careful concerning what you hear. They have the potency to remove the seed of the word of God from you and replace it with what you heard. These spiritual attacks are manipulated to hinder the believer from reaching his or her spiritual goals or objectives for the glory of God. Listening to the word of God can be achieved through bible discussions, teachings and bible audio recordings.
- Speak the word consistently
What you speak defines who you are.
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20 (KJV). If you speak the words of God, you acknowledge him as your source of everything and create space for him to effect the potency of His Word in your life.
11 If any man speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:11 (KJV)
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE WORD
And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Acts 20:32 (KJV). Meaning, God's word carries some unlimited graces which enable the believer in his walk with God.
- It defines who you are in the body of Christ either of light or part of the world of darkness.
- It provides a legal authorization to know God by who he is, and what he does and can do as well.
- It provides us with spiritual patterns or blueprints for accessing God's graces, mercies, favour and other spiritual blessings.
- It gives life even to any dead figure in one's life.
- It provides us with dominion and power over sins, our adversary satan and his evil works.
